Cold Cream, Cork & the Country Glow
The ideal of translucent pallor. The Regency lady tends to her skin intensively with cooling rose water and almond oil (cold cream). Instead of harsh contours, merely a hint of liquid rouge (Bloom of Roses) is seamlessly blended. The eyebrows, too, retain their natural fullness and are at most softly traced with a touch of elderberry juice or burnt cork, rather than being unnaturally plucked.
Hair & Grooming:
Antique Curls & Dashing Hussars
Shaping according to the classical ideal. The lady wears her natural hair in delicate corkscrew curls (ringlets) after the Roman fashion. The civilian gentleman shines with a wind-tousled short haircut (Titus) and a strictly clean-shaven face, upon which only sideburns (mutton chops) are permitted to grow. The sole, much-admired exception in the ballroom is granted to cavalry officers and hussars, for whom a martial moustache forms part of the good tone of their uniform.
The Scent of the Regency:
Botanical Freshness
The scent of innocence and purity. Heavy animalic perfumes are now deemed vulgar and a relic of a decadent past. The ball society of Bath or London is subtly fragranced with the scents of the domestic garden: lavender, rose, violet, and rosemary dominate the olfactory etiquette.
Hat, Bonnet & Diadem:
From the Promenade to the Ballroom
Headwear as a reflection of the time of day. When strolling upon the promenade, the charming poke bonnet for the lady and the top hat for the gentleman are indispensable. In the evening, within the ballroom, the picture transforms: the lady now crowns her head with a diadem, ribbon, or turban, while the gentleman sets aside his top hat and instead gallantly carries his flat bicorne (chapeau bras) under his arm.
